第3回英語セミナー（報告その3）
前回，初級編で質問の出た，
コロンとセミコロンの用法について
グレース美幸さんが解説をして下さいました．
以下，グレースさんの書いて下さった解説です．
セミコロンの使い方：
セミコロンはカンマ以上、ピリオド以下。
文の構成を明確にするために使います。
1.独立した節（clause）を等位接続詞を使わずに接続する
等位接続詞とは：
(１) 連結接続詞
and、both〜and･･･、as well as、not only〜but also･･･、
(2) 選択接続詞（２つのうち一つを選ばせる）
or、nor、either〜or･･･、neither〜nor、otherwise 、
(3) 反意接続詞 but
という、この接続詞の右辺と左辺が同格
（名詞同士、補語同士など）をつなぐ言葉です。
ただし通常は、セミコロンを使う代わりに、
カンマ＋等位接続詞を使う方が自然で堅苦しくありません。
例文：
The weather is great, we will go to the park.
(誤り：カンマは節を接続することができない)
The weather is great, and we will go to the park.（正しい）
The weather is great. We will go to the park.（正しい）
The weather is great; we will go to the park.(正しい)
To err is human; to forgive is divine.
(模範例。対比が美しい！)
2.接続副詞を使って独立した節を接続する場合は、
接続副詞の前にセミコロンが必須となる。
接続副詞とは、
accordingly, consequently, however, moreover,
nevertheless, thereforeなど、
接続詞のように機能する副詞のこと。
ただし、接続詞ではないので、節と節をつなぐことができない。
例文：
It is going to rain tomorrow.
However, we will go to the park anyway. (正しい)
It is going to rain tomorrow,
however, we will go to the park anyway.
(誤り：接続副詞は節をつなぐことができない)
It is going to rain tomorrow;
however, we will go to the park anyway. (正しい)
3.3つ以上の独立した節を羅列する際には、
セミコロンが必須となる。
句を羅列する際、カンマで区切って、
最後にカンマ＋andを使うのと同様の用法
例文：
I am a good student. I study at Nagoya University.
My brother studies at Kyoto University. (正しい)
I am a good student; I study at Nagoya University;
my brother studies at Kyoto University.（正しい）
I am a good student and I study at Nagoya University,
but my brother studies at Kyoto University.（正しい）
4.本来であればカンマ＋等位接続詞を使うべきところを、
カンマで挟まれた挿入句があるため、
それと区別するためにセミコロン＋等位接続詞にする。
例文：
The Radical Wild, who number more than 50,000, threatened to march through the test city； but their application for a parade permit was immediately denied.
5.カンマが使われている句を羅列する時、
区切りをわかりやすくするためにセミコロンを使う。
例文：
I have visited Tokyo, Japan； Seoul, Korea； Bangkok, Thailand； and Sydney, Australia.

人間の幸福な生活には、安心した暮らしが基本となる。
安全・安心学は人間や生活圏を出発点として安心な環境を形成するために資する学問である。一つは、市民の暮らす都市の環境を健全な状態に保つための研究 であり、都市の大気汚染、ヒートアイランド現象、騒音・振動、廃棄物、 歴史的環境の破壊など、身近な環境悪化要因についてその発生原因を研究し、それらを改善しながら環境と共生する社会システムを形成するための研究である。 他の一つは、地震・火山・風水害などの自然災害、原子力事故などの人為災害、犯罪行為などの様々な災害に対して安全に暮らせる社会を作るための研究であ る。
人間・社会をとりまく様々な災害の発生原因の研究をすると共に、これらの災害を予防する事前対策の方法を研究したり、災害が発生したときの波及効果（災 害連鎖、経済・社会的波及、心理的抑圧）などについて研究する。さらに、我々の社会の許容レベルを越える巨大災害に対する危機管理のあり方についても研究 を行う。

Safety and security are the foundations of a happy life.
The study of safety and security is that of making an investment in the creation (and sustaining) of a safe environment focusing on mankind and his habitat. It is a study in keeping the urban environment healthy and suitable for human life: a study of causes of familiar elements of negative impacts such as air pollution, heat-island phenomena, (traffic) noise and vibration, garbage and waste, and the destruction of historical environments to eliminate them and create a social system co-existing with the environment.
It is also a study in creating a safe society where people are protected from natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, typhoons and floods; and from anthropogenic sources such as crime, and disasters such as accidents at nuclear power plants.
